History

  • The Mines & Minerals Department, Govt. of Assam is an Administrative Department of Assam Secretariat. The Mines & Minerals Department is 2nd largest Revenue earning Department in the State of Assam. The Department of Mines & Minerals is the Investigative, Administrative, Advisory and Promotional arm of the Govt of Assam in Mineral Development. The Department is entrusted with regulatory and promotional tasks, which involve mineral investigation, exploration receipt and processing of mineral concession applications, approved mining plans, grant and monitoring of Leases, monitoring of production and dispatch, collection of mineral revenue, development of mineral based industries in the State. 

    It coordinates with all geological agencies like Oil India Ltd. & Oil & Natural Gas Corporation etc. for carrying out geological investigations and exploration in the State. It helps in identifying the mineral potential for exploitation and development of mineral based industries in the State.

    The Mines & Minerals Department has allowed 7 (seven) Nos. of bidders to operate marginal oil fields. The marginal oil fields were put to auction by the ONGC & OIL and the highest eligible bidders were accepted by the bidding authority for production of marginal oil fields and also the Department issued total 28 Nos. of PML which includes 23 Nos. to ONGC & 5 to Oil India Ltd. respectively.

    To streamline, increase the collection of revenues, prevent illegal mining and less human intervention in the operation of minor minerals like sands, gravels, boulders, the Mines & Minerals Department has taken up for amendment of the Assam Minerals Concession Rules, 2013.
